Do you need a local SIM card when traveling? This is a common question men ask, even when it comes to experienced travelers.
The answer: it depends.
But there are six key things that will influence whether or not you will need to purchase a local SIM card:
- Your Phone
- Your Carrier
- Your Plan
- Your Data Usage Needs
- Country You Are Visiting
- Your Privacy Needs
Let’s discuss each of these in detail to help you determine if you need to buy a local SIM card when traveling to your next destination.
Your Cellphone
You will need a modern cellphone when traveling abroad.
If you have a very old phone, flip-phone, or “dumb-phone” it might not be compatible with foreign cell networks.
Next, your phone needs to be capable to accepting a physical or e-SIM (digital SIM) card.
Unfortunately, Apple has removed the physical SIM card slot from new iPhone models sold in the United States. And not all foreign SIM card providers understand how to setup an e-SIM card. This is because physical SIM cards are still the norm in many countries. (This is true in Asia, Europe, and South America…so basically everywhere except the US.)
Another thing to keep in mind is that your phone must be “unlocked” in order to use foreign carrier SIM cards. And if you purchased your phone with a payment plan, your carrier probably won’t unlock the phone until it is paid off.
So it is possible you will need to purchase a second phone that is unlocked and has a physical SIM card slot. This would become your “Travel Phone”.
Your Carrier
Some carriers have excellent international travel plans.
For example, Verizon allows you to pay $10 per day to access their international plan. This gives you a daily high-speed data allowance and unlimited slower data after you run out.
But convenience is the biggest advantage to using a reliable carrier you already have a plan with. It is very nice to land in a foreign country, power up your phone, and have instant access to phone and data.
And I emphasize the word reliable for a reason. If your carrier does not have a good international presence you will likely have a terrible experience. U.S. Cellular failed me and some of my family members on multiple international trips.
So I speak from experience when I say that getting a local SIM card is essential if your local carrier does not have a reputation for international phone and data.
Your Plan
You will need to find out if your cell phone plan is compatible with international travel.
If you currently use prepaid cards to fill up your phone, then your plan is most likely not going to offer any international travel options.
Visit a local cellphone store several weeks before your trip and ask about the international options available with your current phone and plan.
Do not wait to do this until the last minute or you will almost certainly regret it.
If you have an international option that is reasonably priced and makes sense, then activate it. And be sure to deactivate it when you get back home.
If the prices are too high or an international plan is not available, then you will need to get a local SIM card when you land in your destination country.
Your Data Usage Needs
Your data usage needs will have one of the biggest impacts on whether or not you need a local SIM card when traveling.
If you just need to check email and browse the web, your international data plan will likely be sufficient.
But if you are running an online business, plan to upload videos, or have extensive video calls…then you’ll probably need to supplement you international data plan with a local SIM card.
In almost all cases it will be cheaper to purchase a local SIM card for excessive high-speed data usage, compared to purchasing it from international plan upgrades.
The Country You Are Visiting
Be sure to check your cellphone provider’s website before you leave. You should do this to confirm the level of coverage you will have in every country you are visiting.
All major carriers have a page on their website where you can confirm cell coverage and data availability.
It is also wise to confirm you have coverage for the countries you will be traveling through on the way to your final destination.
This will help you avoid a scenario where you are temporarily without data.
Unfortunately, if you do not have an international plan, you will be without data until you are able to purchase a local SIM card. Although you can always connect to free WI-FI, this isn’t a good idea unless you have one of the best VPNs.
Your Privacy Needs
Many experienced men choose to purchase a local SIM card for privacy reasons when it comes to dating foreign women.
This is to prevent the girls you date from Googling your real phone number and finding out everything about you before you’ve even met.
Although there are different methods available (including burner numbers), popping in a new local SIM card is a fast and easy way to maintain your privacy.
If this sounds like overkill, don’t be fooled. There are scammers, criminals, and gang members using dating apps every day to find potential fraud victims. And kidnapping is a real risk in Mexico and South America.
Lastly, some girls would have no hesitation to start contacting your friends and family members. For any number of reasons: good, bad, or downright evil.
So if you are a wealthy and successful man, I highly recommend using a burner number or local SIM cart to protect your privacy and safety.
Next Steps
Your first order of business is to contact your cellphone service provider to determine your international coverage options.
Then you need to confirm that your cellphone is unlocked and capable of connecting to other carrier networks.
Based on this information, you should know if you need to purchase a local SIM card.
In many cases it will not be necessary due to the international plans offered by the major carriers (Verizon, AT&T, etc.). But in some cases it will make sense to purchase a local SIM card. Especially if privacy or data usage is a concern.
